[Preludes and Fugues] from the Well-Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach, arranged for Woodwind and Strings — [Präludien und Fugen] aus dem Wohltemperierten Klavier von Johann Sebastian Bach, eingerichtet für Holzbläser und Streicher — [Préludes et Fugues] de J.-S. Bach (Clavier bien temperée] transcrits pour bois et cordes
Remarks: Strawinsky’s final artistic work seems to have been an orchestration of Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (First volume: No. 4 in c sharp minor, No. 10 in e minor, No. 24 in b flat minor; Second volume: No. 6 in d minor) for 3 clarinets, 2 bassoons and strings. The arrangements, which were clearly not authorized for printing, were written in April 1969 in Hollywood and New York. The first of the pieces (I/4) was performed on 13th September 1982 at the International Strawinsky Symposium in San Diego. The works remain in manuscript form and were not published. References in the literature to a 1969 edition by Boosey & Hawkes are based on an error. The handwritten copy belonged to Robert Craft’s collection according to Christian Goubault.
